Exhibition "Breaktrough into the past. Tarkovsky & Plavinsky" New Space Moscow Buy ticket

AZ Museum, Two Andreys Foundation, New Space. Theatre of Nations present an exhibition on the occasion of 50th anniversary of the film Andrei Rublev, 85th birth anniversary of Andrei Tarkovsky and 80th birth anniversary of Dmitri Plavinsky.

The multimedia project Breakthrough into the Past brings together in one space the works of the great Russian artists of the 20th century – Andrei Tarkovsky and Dmitri Plavinsky. Their artistic careers began in the early 1960s – a time of innovation in Soviet art that would later be called “the Soviet Renaissance.” Freedom became the central theme of the epoch. For Tarkovsky and Plavinsky, it referred, above all, to the freedom of creativity.

Tarkovsky and Plavinsky never met in person, but the directions of their artistic search were similar at the time. They were both attracted to the aesthetics of the ancient Russian icon as an embodiment of the Christian worldview and as a path to spiritual perfection and inner freedom.

The filming of Andrei Rublev took place in Izborsk, Suzdal and Vladimir. At the same time, Dmitri Plavinsky was travelling around the Russian North, working in Izborsk where he imitated ancient Russian frescoes.

Both artists had the artistic and human courage to come as close as possible to the understanding of the spiritual foundations of the ancient Russian culture. In their work, Tarkovsky and Plavinsky brought this culture back into the context of contemporary art, making it modern. This was their “breakthrough into the past.”

In the project the famous classic images created by the artists are used as well as the unique artefacts connected to their artistic life, which have never been shown before.
