Scientific performance Maxim Krongauz Let us speak and spell incorrectly! From memes to emoji New Space Moscow Registration

«Let us speak and spell incorrectly! From memes to emoji» is a scientific performance by Maxim Krongauz.

Participants: Maxim Krongauz, Victoria Merzlyakova, Alexander Pipersky, Anton Somin and Yulia Chernenko.

A team of linguists and culture studies scholars led by Maxim Krongauz, a professor at Higher School of Economics (Moscow), will present their latest publication – the «Dictionary of web.ru language», which they believe will be useful for both non-web-savvy community, and also for the readers who are interested in the latest developments of modern Russian language.

The scientists will discuss specifics of communication and online use of language. Why does something happen to all of the languages when they are used for online communication? What is it exactly that happens to them?

Another interesting topic to be raised – is the one about various online sub-cultures, such as so-called kashenits, fido-guys, gamers, anonymous, basterds etc. What have those sub-cultural communities contributed to the general language bank? The discussion will focus on some rather amazing Russian-specific online slang terms.

However, all talk aside, the authors of the book will conduct a linguistic experiment,to have the end result used in their further studies. Visitors will also have a chance to partake in a game focused on the knowledge of online slang, and the winner will take home a prize – a copy of the aforementioned dictionary.
